Recreational Light Touring Touring Fishing Surf
Don't know where to start?
Then consider the different types of kayaks:

NOTE: whether a kayak is of a decked (sit-inside) or sit-on-top configuration has nothing to do with what type of kayak it is. Both configurations exist in all types of kayaks.

Recreational Kayaks are the type of boat that you would use to mainly dink around a lake or gently moving river. Some recreational designs are good for paddling up to five or six miles. You might go fishing, bird watching or take pictures in a recreational kayak. They are the most stable of the different types, which makes them easy and comfortable for rank beginners. And because of their small size, they are very lightweight, which makes them easier to move around on land.
Light Touring Kayaks make great day trippers. These boats draw key features from both recreational and touring designs. You kind of get the best of both worlds. Light Touring kayaks will usually range in length from twelve to fifteen feet. Most will glide like a short touring kayak, but without sacrificing stability. Want to go on that weekend camping trip? That shouldn't be a problem! Light Touring kayaks generally have plenty of room for weekender.
Touring Kayaks are the ultimate in efficiency. Long, slender designs give touring kayaks the performance characteristics needed for long distance paddling. Do you want to be able to paddle twenty miles in the wind? Then a touring kayak is for you. Where these boats differ most from each other is in the hull design. It simply depends on the level of performance that you want. Of course, we can't forget about the large amount of cargo space. Go for a ten day tour if you want; the boat can handle it!
Fishing Kayaks are those that are intended to be used for all type of fishing, event offshore. Increased stability and built-in features are what make these boats more conducive to fishing than others. You'll find such features as rod holders, paddle holders, tackle tray holders, bait bucket holders and so on. So, if your primary purchase for kayaking is to fish, then you should certainly consider a fishing kayak.
Surf Kayaks are a special breed. They allow paddlers of all abilities to go have fun in the waves. Just be careful that you don't go out in conditions that exceed your abilities. Some surf kayaks are only good for point-n-shoot type rides, while others allow you to shred as if you where on a surfboard. Many of the high performance surf kayaks have the ability to attach fins. And just like all other types of kayaks, they come in both sit-on-top and decked configurations.
