REELING IN SPRING
by Adam Morley
Here are some tips from one of our local inshore fishermen, Adam Morley, when going out on the flats this spring. He gives you an idea of what you can expect to catch and with what baits. Good luck out there!
Redfish (Reds, Red Drum, Red Bass)
Q: What catches Redfish?
A: If the water is glassy or has a light chop, top water plugs, such as the Top Dog series, work well. They will also eat live shrimp and finger mullet on a float.
Q: What colors work well for top water plugs?
A: The best color schemes I have found are: white with a red head and the white belly, silver sides and blue back combo.
Flounder
Q: What do I catch flounder with?
A: Lead heads with a live shrimp or mullet hooked through the lips or head.
Q: Can you catch flounder on lures?
A: Sure, curly tail grubs work well along with some sinking twitch baits.
Speckled Sea Trout
Q: Where do trout like to feed?
A: In eddies around fast moving currents. They will hang out in the eddies until a school of bait comes along with the current, then they will dart out to grab a meal.
Q: Have I caught more trout with bait or lures?
A: I would have to say lures because they are easier to work in fast moving currents. Again, curly tail grubs work well, along with some crank baits such as a red and white Rat-L-Trap.
